Most boilers in Scotland get replaced in a hurry, usually in January when the old one packs in and the house is freezing. A bit of planning beforehand makes the difference between a rushed decision and a boiler that suits your home for the next fifteen years. A well maintained gas boiler usually lasts 12 to 15 years. Past that point, repairs get dearer because parts become scarce and efficiency drops off.
